Shanks set the school record for single-game all-purpose yards with 311, including a school record 139 punt return yards. He had four total touchdowns with five catches for 153 yards and three touchdowns, while adding a 58-yard punt return touchdown in the second quarter. He had 19 rushing yards for his final tally of 311 total yards.
Kitna threw for 404 yards and a school-record tying six touchdown passes. He became just the second player in school history to throw six touchdown passes in a game and set an FBS school record, joining only John Whitcomb who threw six touchdowns twice as 1-AA members in 1993 and 1994.
Additionally, Harrison Barker also threw a touchdown pass on UAB's first score of the game, and the seven total touchdown passes established a new school record.
UAB (2-6, 1-4 AAC) outgained Tulsa (3-6, 1-4 AAC) 537-423 in total offense and UAB had chunk plays throughout the game with seven plays of 20 or more yards, including touchdown passes of 20, 67, 34 and 48.
Defensively, linebackers Everett Roussaw Jr. (11) and Michael Moore (8) led the Blazers in tackles, while Desmond Little had 2.5 TFL and cornerback Colby Dempsey had two pass breakups. Tulsa had 119 of its 423 yards in the fourth quarter when the game was far out of reach.
UAB scored on its first two possessions as Armoni Goodwin found the end zone for the first time this season, followed by a 14-yard pass from Kitna to Bryce Damous. After a muffed punt by Tulsa, Amare Thomas hauled in his first of two touchdowns of the day for a 21-0 lead after one.
Shanks took over in the second quarter with a 67-yard touchdown grab and his 58-yard punt return touchdown. UAB led 45-7 at the break.
Tulsa scored on the first possession of the second half, but 34 and 48-yard touchdown passes from Kitna to Shanks made the score 59-14 after three and the Blazers put it on cruise control in the fourth.
With eight catches and two touchdowns today, sophomore Amare Thomas moved into 10th place on UAB's career receptions list (95) and ninth in career receiving touchdowns (11).
The Blazers return to action next Saturday at Protective Stadium for their final non-conference game of the season against UConn. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
