Volleyball Secures Eighth Seed in AAC Tournament

BIRMINGHAM - UAB volleyball goes 1-1 on the final weekend of the regular season. The Blazers beat FAU 3-1 on Friday, but lost to USF 0-3 today. With the win on Friday UAB earns the #8 seed to advance to the AAC tournament.
Kelsey Smith had a huge performance, tying a career high of 50 assists in the win against FAU. Smith averaged 12.5 assists per set and helped Jorda Crook, Abby Jones, and Mia Reese to double digit kills. Crook finished with a game high 21 kills. Jones finished with a career high of 18 kills.
FAU took a very close set one 25-23 before UAB won three straight to win the match. Sets one through three were all decided by just two points. The Blazers actually led 15-9 midway through set two. FAU stormed back and made it close, but Mia Reese finished the set off 26-24. A combined 11 kills from Jones and Crook put the game away in the third set.
On Sunday, the Blazers had a tough task of beating the 18-9 South Florida Bulls. The Bulls were looking to clinch at least a spot of the AAC regular season title. South Florida came out of the gates playing like the number one team in the conference.They went on a 5-0 run to lead 9-7 and never looked back.
USF hit .459 with double the amount of assists as UAB had. They outscored UAB 75-45 in three sets. One other dominant statistic was service aces, which the Bulls controlled 12-5.
UAB will play the #1 seeded South Florida Bulls on Friday, November 22nd at 5 p.m.The Tournament will be hosted by Wichita State in Wichita,Kansas.
