Women’s Basketball Downs Mississippi Valley State, 92-66

BIRMINGHAM – Junior forward Tracey Bershers led five players in doubles figures with a career-high 22 points as the UAB women's basketball team defeated Mississippi Valley State 92-66 on Saturday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Bershers scored her 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-7 from behind the arc. Journey Armstead had a season-best 16 points and added five assists. Jade Weathersby recorded double figures for the third consecutive game with 13 points and collected nine rebounds. Rayne Tucker tallied 10 points and six rebounds and Maddie Walsh also registered 10 points and five rebounds.
The first quarter the two teams traded punches for the first eight minutes, but the Blazers pulled away with back-to-back made shots from Sara Bershers and Tracey Bershers (20-13). Tracey Bershers hit a three with 54 seconds left to give UAB a 23-15 advantage. MVSU's Mikaela Parris made a jump shot with 22 seconds on the clock to make the score 23-17 at the end of the first.
Mississippi Valley State cut into the Blazers lead in the second quarter and tied the score 35-35 with 2:30 left. MVSU took the lead 38-35 after a 3-pointer from Janiya Jones. UAB took back the lead 41-40, but the Devilettes went in front 42-41 after a layup from D'Yanna Maxey heading into halftime.
The Blazers scored the next nine points coming out of halftime to give UAB a 50-42 lead and would not let go of it for the remainder of the game. The Green and Gold scored 30 points in the third quarter and the Blazers defense held Mississippi Valley State to nine points. UAB had a 20-point lead (71-51) going into the final frame.
The Green and Gold built their biggest lead in the fourth quarter at 28 points and scored 51 points in the second half. The Blazers scored 40 points in the paint and shot 49 percent while holding MVSU to shooting 39 percent. The Blazers out-rebounded the Devilettes 47-34.
