BIRMINGHAM – UAB women's soccer had a player notch a weekly honor, as officials from the league office announced on Friday that Abbey Burns earned AAC Offensive Player of the Week.
"We are so pleased for Abbey," head coach Lisa Mann said. "She has been amazing all season, leading by example, playing any role we ask of her to a very high level, and ending the season scoring seven goals. She is an incredible person and player, and fully deserves this recognition."
Burns, a midfielder, played a huge role in keeping UAB unbeaten at home for the first time in program history on Thursday night. The Blazers tied North Texas 2-2 at PNC Field to close out the regular season.
UAB was down 2-0 in the second half after the Mean Green scored goals in the 7th minute and 65th minute. In the 70th minute Burns took a free kick and found the back of the net to allow the Blazers to only be down one (2-1).
With seven minutes left in the match, Burns was able to equalize the match (2-2) with an assist from Avery Berryman. So far this season, Burns has scored seven goals while the assist marks Berryman's second of the season.
UAB finished tied for fourth in the conference standings and will be the No. 5 seed in the American Athletic Conference Tournament. The Blazers will face No. 4 seed Rice on Monday, November 4 at 4 p.m. CT.
