BIRMINGHAM - The UAB Cross Country team heads to the Georgia Tech XC Invitational in Fairburn, Ga. on Friday, October 4 after a three week break between meets. The Blazers were scheduled to race in the FSU Pre-Regional meet in Tallahassee, Fla. on Friday, September 27, but the meet was canceled due to Hurricane Helene.
The Blazers look to capitalize on their brief race hiatus by finishing strong in Friday's meet. "We are excited to race since our last meet was canceled," said head coach Travis Pope. "We were able to train a bit more and gear up for this race. The goal for this race is to take a few more risks in the middle of the race and run a bit more as a team. If we do that we should give ourselves a shot at a top 3 finish."
27 teams will be racing on Friday. Along with Georgia Tech, Florida State, Troy, Georgia State, South Alabama, Kennesaw State, Georgia Southern are all among others participating.
Sophomore Katie Keur looks to lead the Blazers Friday morning. In the JSU Southern Showcase on September 13, Keur ran the 5k in 17:56, just missing her PR by 4 seconds. Her lone 6k time came in the 2023 American Athletic Conference XC Championships when she finished in 22:12.
Lia Castillo, Lidia Longo, Anna Behmer, and Kyra Hayes also look to contribute competitive results. The quartet of Blazers all finished in the top 200 in the JSU Southern Showcase. Castillo, Longo, and Kaitlyn Wende all set personal bests in that race.
The women's 6k race will begin at 8:20 a.m. CT at Bouckaert Farm. Awards will be at 9:15 a.m. CT. Fans can follow live results of the meet HERE.
