DENTON, Texas – The UAB women's basketball team suffered an 87-72 loss at North Texas on Sunday afternoon in Denton.
The Blazers (15-5, 6-2 AAC) shot 39 percent for the game, but North Texas (17-3, 7-1 AAC) was 56 percent from the floor and UNT now has sole possession of first place in the American Athletic Conference.
Ashton Elley had a standout game for the Blazers off the bench with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting and made 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Mia Moore made 7-of-11 for 15 points, while Demin DeShields also had 15 and Tracey Bershers 11.
However, UAB could not slow down DesiRay Kernal who made 12 of her 15 shots for 28 points to go along with nine rebounds. UNT also received 19 from Tommisha Lampkin and 18 from Dyani Robinson.
The Blazers led for the majority of the first quarter and back-to-back 3-pointers from Ashton Elley and Tracey Bershers gave UAB a 17-14 advantage at the end of the first.
North Texas opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to gain a 21-17 lead and ultimately led 27-23 at the second quarter media timeout. UNT doubled up UAB in the second quarter 26-13 and led by 10 (40-30) at the break.
UNT started the third quarter on a 10-2 run and a layup from Lampkin forced a UAB timeout at the 5:20 mark of the third with UNT leading 50-32. The Mean Green had a 65-48 advantage after three.
The gap was too big for UAB to close in the fourth and the Blazers would only be able to get within 12 in the final quarter as they suffered their second conference loss of the season.
UAB returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at home against Florida Atlantic. Tip is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
