BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track & Field hosted their first meet of 2024 with the Vulcan Invite on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The Blazers finished the Vulcan Invite with 11 top-10 finishes, multiple PRs and with stand-out freshman Gabby Washington setting a new all-time school record in the process. "We had a few positive takeaways from today's meet," said Head Coach Kurt Thomas. "It also helped us identify where we need to get better.
On the track, Eriyanna Reed ran a 58.54 in the 400m to claim fourth place while teammate Jasmine Dereje ran a 1:00.69 for a sixth-place finish. Regina Harris, Alicia Abalos Cervera and Ariana Felton all placed in the top-10 in the 600m, with Harris running a 1:36.30 for a new PR in the event.
Washington, for the second competition in-a-row, has etched her name into the UAB Track & Field record book. In the 300m, Washington was able to run a 39.023 to set a new All-Time Indoor Record. "The highlight of the day was Gabby Washington setting a school record in the 300m dash. And that was a very fast record by a very talented athlete that she took down," said Thomas.
Lia Castillo and Anna Behmer recorded times of 5:13.28 and 5:14.40 in the 1 Mile to finish in seventh and ninth place. Kathleen Schellman was UAB's lone competitor in the 3000m, where she was able to run a 10:12.35 to claim a fifth-place finish.
In the field events, Trinity Fellows recorded a 3.66m vault in the Pole Vault which was a new PR and able to claim her third-place. Mikayla Williams was able to place fifth in the Triple Jump with a leap of 11.20m.
"Trinity Fellows bolted really well today. Regina Harris and the girls in the 600m race ran well. We had several other PRs that were great to see. Every team is coming off the holiday break and it definitely showed some rustiness on our part. The girls came out and competed hard, which is what we ask of them. We just need to get back to some consistent training and start to feel more sharp over the next few weeks. This team can definitely make that happen," said Thomas.
