BIRMINGHAM – UAB Volleyball concluded the first evening against the Tarleton State Texans. The Blazers fell to Tarleton in three sets, with their overall record falling to 2-5.
The Blazers finished with 40 kills, with three players attacking over .400. The Green and Gold also had a defensive showing with 18 block assists and 47 digs. The determining factor came from a last set offensive run from the Texans to finish the match in straight sets.
IN THE SETS
Set one began with a close quarters meeting between the Texans and Blazers. The Green and Gold stayed within a point of Tarleton, before a series of kills from TSU put the score at 11 apiece. A series of kills and aces from the Texans pushed the score to a one point lead before the Blazers tied again with a kill from Jay Collins. The set remained close before Tarleton went on a 4-1 run to take set one.
The second set saw an early 2-0 lead before the Blazers took the lead after an Ace from Delaney Bowser and block assist from Madison Page and Kelsey Smith. Tarleton regained the lead after a series of runs that pushed the score margin to three. The Blazers rallied back with a three point run off back-to-back errors and a block assist from Page and Smith. With the score at 20-22, Tarleton went on a 3-1 run and secured the second set.
The final set saw Tarleton jump to a seven-point lead, but the Blazers started a 4-0 run with a series of kills from Page and freshman Mia Reese. Page and Smith tallied two more blocks to close the score margin to three with a score of 8-11. UAB remained in a three point deficit for the remainder of the match, with UAB adding kills from Reese and Rodriguez, but it would not be enough to extend the match. The Blazers would fall 19-25.
IN THE BOX
- UAB tallied a .259 attack percentage to Tarleton's .289. UAB finished with a higher set of total attacks in the final set with 38 to TSU's 27.
- The Blazers had a higher number of blocks with 11 to the Texans' four. Madison Page finished the night with eight block assists.
- Mia Reese tallied a second double-digit kill night with 11.
- UAB finished with less attack errors and block errors. However the Texans forced more reception errors, and the Green and Gold totaled more service errors.
UP NEXT
The Blazers return to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 to take on the Texas A&M Commerce Lions. The Green and Gold take the court at 2 PM.
