UAB Football Falls to No. 1 Georgia 49-21 in Athens

UAB quarterback Jacob Zeno accounted for all three UAB touchdowns with two passing and one rushing. He finished the game 32-of-51 for 250 yards and helped UAB (1-3) compile 336 total yards of offense.
However, the Bulldogs (4-0) gained 582 yards of total offense, led by quarterback Carson Beck who was 22-of-32 for 338 yards and three touchdowns. His top target was All-American tight end Brock Bowers who finished the game with nine catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
UAB won the turnover battle 3-1, highlighted by running back Lee Beebe recovering two fumbles on special teams. His first recovery late in the first quarter led directly to a UAB touchdown which tied the game at 7-7.
Defensively, safety Ike Rowell led the Blazer with eight tackles, a forced fumble and a TFL. Keondre Swoopes and Damien Miller each had six tackles and Miller forced two fumbles.
Georgia scored on the game's opening possession to take an early 7-0 lead, but the UAB defense held strong and UAB eventually tied the game at 7-7 with 14:09 left in the second quarter on a 4-yard pass from Zeno to Bryce Damous.
However, the Bulldogs scored the next 21 points to surge ahead 28-7 with 1:26 remaining in the half. The Blazers responded with an excellent hurry-up drive which was capped by Amare Thomas' first career touchdown reception, making the score 28-14 at the half.
Georgia, who has not allowed a point in the third quarter this season, added two touchdowns in the quarter to gain a 42-14 lead entering the final 15 minutes.
Each team scored a touchdown in the fourth for the final score of 49-21.
UAB now turns its attention to conference action and plays its first-ever AAC game next Saturday at Tulane. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. on ESPN2.
GAME NOTES:
- Jacob Zeno has now thrown for at least 250 yards in every game this season.
- Zeno now has thrown for 1,206 yards this season (301.5/game) and has accounted for 11 touchdowns.
- True freshman Amare Thomas had a career-night with nine catches for 60 yards and a touchdown.
- UAB's 21 points scored were the most Georgia has allowed to an opponent this season.
- Jermaine Brown Jr. had 133 all-purpose yards and now 3,812 career all-purpose yards.
- Freshman Ricky Lee III had his first career interception.
