BIRMINGHAM – UAB Cross Country prepares for the 2023 Foothills Invitational hosted by Jacksonville State University, their first race of the season for the Blazers. The Green and Gold will begin the season under the helm of Travis Pope, who begins his first year as head coach of Blazers.
"The goal with any first meet is to shake the rust off from not competing in a while and get into a competitive mindset. We will take some risks in the race to see what happens. We are excited to see how it all plays out." Said head coach Travis Pope.
Last year, the Blazers began their season at the Foothills Invitational, where they finished fourth overall with two top-ten finishes, including a sixth-place finish from Kyra Hayes. Hayes and teammates Alicia Abalos Cervera, Kathleen Schellman, Gracie Sears and Anna Behmer are a few athletes returning for the 2023 season.
Newcomers Lidia Longo, Lia Castillo, Katie Keur and Ariana Felton join the Blazers in their first race in Green and Gold.
"We are excited to get the season underway at the Foothills Invitational. This will be our first competitive opportunity to gauge how our training has been going so far," said Pope on the first race of the year. "The team has had some great workouts recently, and they should boost their confidence going into an under distance race at 4K."
The Women's 4K for the Foothills Invitational kicks off on Friday, September 1 at 5 PM in Oxford, Alabama at Choccolocco Park. Live results for the Foothills Invitational are housed on Xpress Timing.
