BIRMINGHAM – After 80 minutes of level play, Kate Henderson scored the only goal of the match as No. 7 Alabama held off UAB 1-0 at PNC Field on Sunday night.
Eve Beyer turned away seven Crimson Tide shots for the Blazers (0-2-0).
"Alabama is a team that can be competing, not just for the SEC title, but for the national title, and we took them all the way to the very end," said head coach Lisa Mann.
The lone goal was set up when Marianna Annest fed Henderson in the box. Her shot just made it through on the left side, getting a favorable carom from the post.
UAB had a chance to score in the 71st minute, but Morgan White's shot off a free kick was wide left. The Blazers' lone corner kick came in the 88th minute, but they were called for a foul, eliminating any scoring chance.
"If the effort the girls gave tonight is any indication of how we play the remainder of our games, we're going to be just fine," added Mann.
The Blazers have their first road match of the season when they visit Alabama State in Montgomery on Aug. 24. The Hornets (0-1-1) tied Faulkner earlier this afternoon.
The next home match is against Jacksonville State on Aug. 27.
