UAB Meets Samford for Second Mid-Week Matchup

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Blazers (16-34, 7-20) will travel across Birmingham to Joe Lee Griffin Field for their final home-and-home game against the Samford Bulldogs (29-22) on Tuesday, May 16. First pitch for the mid-week game is set for 6 P.M. on ESPN+.

This will be the third meeting between UAB and Samford since Coach Casey Dunn has become head coach at UAB after serving 17 seasons at the helm for Samford. Coach Dunn has not lost to his former team since moving to UAB.
UAB BLAZERS AS OF LATE
The Blazers are coming off a win over Middle Tennessee on Sunday by a score of 6-2 but dropped the series to the Blue Raiders. Carson Myers threw a career-high eight innings to secure the win while holding MTSU to only two runs on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts in UAB's win.
Gavin Lewis Jr. had a breakout series against the Blue Raiders. Over the three games, Lewis Jr. batted .363 with two home runs, five RBI and two walks with three stolen bases including two in game one of the series. Several Blazers made clutch defensive plays over the weekend including one from Logan Braunschweig and Darryl Buggs who both robbed potential home runs from MTSU.
Braunschweig continues to lead the team offensively with a .327 batting average and has the most runs (27), hits (52) and stolen bases (15). After the weekend seven Blazers have collected at least one home run including Christian Hall who leads the team with six. Braunschweig and Hall both post a slugging percentage of .400 or better (.421 and .418, respectfully).
Braxton Shelton will make his seventh mid-week start on the mound for UAB with a 1-2 record.
SAMFORD BULLDOGS AS OF LATE
The Bulldogs took the series at home against Kansas after taking games one and three. Samford is 5-7 in mid-week games entering this week. Four Bulldogs are hitting .300 or better including leaders Jayden Davis (.374) and Stephen Klein (.329). Samford will start right-hander Jacob Newman against the Blazers.
UAB AND SAMFORD HISTORY
UAB and Samford are no strangers to one another whether that is through coaching ties or playing each other almost for 40 years. Since 2001, Samford leads the overall record 25-17, but UAB has claimed the last two meetings on March 29, 2022 and earlier this year on March 14.
