BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's basketball head coach Andy Kennedy announced the signing of North Carolina transfer and local product Will Shaver on Thursday. Shaver signed with the Tar Heels as the No. 111 player nationally and No. 2 player in the state of Alabama in the 2021 class in the On3 Industry Ranking. The four-star prospect reclassified from the 2022 class midway through his senior year of high school.
"We are excited to welcome Will back home to Birmingham as a member of Blazer Basketball!" Head Coach Andy Kennedy added, "At 6'10, Will brings a unique skill set to our front court. His versatility puts him in a position to make an immediate impact next season."
Shaver enrolled at UNC in January of 2022 and was a member of the team that reached the national championship game. He appeared in three games for the Tar Heels as a redshirt freshman in 2022-23 before missing the remainder of the season with a broken foot.
The Birmingham native helped Oak Mountain capture the 2021 Class 7A State Championship at Bartow Arena, the first in school history, after a pair of state semifinal appearances. Shaver was a two-time All-State selection he scored 20+ points 10 times during his senior season. He averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game during his high school career while shooting 62 percent from the floor, 35 percent from beyond-the-arc and 80 percent from the free throw line.
The 6'10" center is the latest transfer portal addition for the Blazers, joining North Alabama transfer Daniel Ortiz, Ole Miss transfer James White and Arkansas transfer Barry Dunning Jr. UAB has also signed four talented JUCO prospects in Chris Coleman, Marquis Hargrove, Yaxel Lendeborg and Alejandro Vasquez while also adding three-star guard KJ Satterfield from the high school ranks.
