BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track and Field returns to action on Friday April 21, and Saturday April 22 at the Crimson Tide Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama. The Blazers come off a weekend at Samford, with numerous top-ten finishes and PRs to match.
UAB is one of 19 programs competing, with familiar competition joining the pack like Alabama A&M, MTSU, Samford and Troy. The Green and Gold travel to Tuscaloosa with numerous Blazers competing in the weekend meet.
"We are getting close to the end of our regular season. The focus is about sharpening up in events, getting to the start line, runway, ring healthy and ready to compete." said head coach Kurt Thomas. "This meet will be great competition for us, so we're looking forward to getting out there and competing."
In throws, Zoe Winkenwerder and Tia Espinoza represent the Blazers. Haley Dempsey and Maya McDanal also make a showing on the flight sheet on Saturday in the javelin throw.
In distance, five Blazers are competing at Tuscaloosa, including Lauren Charlton, who placed fourth in the Mt. SAC Relays in California. In the 3000 meter steeplechase, Kyra Hayes, Britney Johnson, Ava Brooks and Gracie Sears appear for the Green and Gold.
"Tia Landrum has had a nice season and is looking to keep jumping farther," said Thomas on Shauntia Landrum's appearance at the meet.
In addition to Landrum, Makiyah Sills, Taylor Washington, Kat Duren and Alayah Dozier represent the Green and Gold in the 4x100m relay. In addition to the relay, Duren and Sills will both run in the 100m hurdles, where Duren holds the top mark on the team in the event. "The sprinters and hurdlers have had good training, so this meet will be a great opportunity to show that."
