Softball Goes the Distance with No. 10 Florida in 4-1 Loss

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Softball concluded the Florida series with a 4-1 loss to the No. 10 Gators. The Blazers fall to 10-10 overall as they enter their final run of non-conference play for the 2023 season.

The Blazers and Gators started out with notable performances on the defensive to hold the score at zero apiece between the two. Like previous matchups earlier this season, UAB would be first to strike with an RBI single from Lilly Crowe to give Olivia Valbak the run in the second inning.

UAB continued to hold their ground against Florida before the Gators' Longley sent a homer to right center field to tie the score at one run each. They followed up with another homer from Echols to shift the score in the direction of Florida. The score remained 2-1 in favor of Florida for four innings, with eight runners left on base between the Blazers and Gators.

The Green and Gold went the distance, holding the Gators to two runs before entering the top of the seventh, where Longley sent a solo homer to extend the lead to 3-1. The Blazers responded with Bella Wiggins getting back-to-back flyouts, but the Gators' Walsh delivered an RBI single to tally the final run of the game.

Entering the bottom of the seventh, Lauren Brock reached first on a fielding error from the Gators' first baseman, followed by Sierra Frazier reaching on another fielding error. Brock found herself at third base after the prior error, threatening to score. Olivia Valbak then approached the plate with two outs on the board and a chance to deliver at least two RBIs to close the scoring gap. She then grounded out to Echols, ending the game in seven innings.
