BIRMINGHAM – Coming off a program record 17 wins last season, the UAB beach volleyball team looks to build off that momentum as the Blazers open the 2023 campaign this weekend, Feb. 25-26, at the Third Coast College Classic in Houston.
UAB begins competition with a pair of 2022 NCAA Tournament participants in Texas A&M – Corpus Christi and No. 3 TCU on Saturday, followed by playing Central Arkansas and host Houston Christian on Sunday.
Led by Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year Adriana Pereira, the Blazers return seven of their top 10 players from last year and have added an instant impact transfer and one of the best freshmen classes in program history.
A transfer from Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Brooke Pertuit led the Islanders to the NCAA Tournament last season with a 24-9 overall record on Court 1. She was named the Southland Student-Athlete of the Year and looks to contribute at the top of UAB's lineup alongside Pereira.
A host of veterans in Arden Copping, Mikayla Law-Heese, Emma Andraka, Ella Alexander, Jessica Ennis and Naomi Ortiz all saw significant playing time in the lineup last year and return in 2023, while freshmen Jasmine Haas, Olivia Stant, Olivia Chychrun and Dominique Wofford look to contribute immediately.
Sophomores Ellie Heflin and Ali O'Donnell will also be in the mix for playing time after appearing on Court 6 as true freshmen in 2022.
The Blazers will once again play a schedule that features the top teams in the country. According to the AVCA Preseason Top 20, UAB faces No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 TCU, No. 5 LSU, No. 7 Loyola Marymount, No. 8 Georgia State, No. 15 Stetson, No. 17 Pepperdine and No. 19 South Carolina this season.
