Men's Tennis Adds Michael Helms to Staff

BIRMINGHAM – UAB men's tennis head coach Justin Desanto added Michael Helms as an assistant coach ahead of the 2023 season.
"Adding Michael to the staff is a big win for the Blazers!" Coach Desanto said, "He brings many years of experience as not only a student of the game, but also a high level teaching pro. In all my years in coaching I haven't been around someone so eager to learn and improve as a coach. He brings great energy every day and has already had a positive impact on our guys."
Prior to UAB, Michael a USPTA Certified Tennis Professional has spent more than 15 years teaching and coaching a variety of players from beginners to college developing them to reach their full potential in the sport. He teaches part-time at the Pelham Racquet Club in Pelham, AL. Michael is a 2001 business marketing graduate of Jacksonville State University where he was an all-conference baseball player. In addition to coaching tennis, Coach Helms is widely known as "Helmsey" on the nationally syndicated Rick & Bubba Show.
Helmsey resides in Vestavia Hills, AL with his wife Amanda of more than 20 years. They have 3 children, Brayden, Caroline and Madelyn.
"I am extremely excited to be part of the Blazer family and to have the opportunity to work with a program with such rich history, continue to learn from Head Coach Justin DeSanto and help be a part of putting our guys in a good position to have success and meet their goals." Helms said.
