UAB Downs Florida Atlantic in AAC Opener, 65-53

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Denim DeShields scored a team-high 16 points and led three players in double figures as the UAB women's basketball team won its first-ever American Athletic Conference game with a 65-53 victory over Florida Atlantic.
DeShields was 7-of-11 from the floor and four assists. Maddie Walsh scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half and added eight rebounds while Jade Weathersby scored 12 points. Tracey Bershers and Mia Moore each shared a team high nine rebounds.
The win improves UAB to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the AAC. Florida Atlantic is now 5-7 and 0-1.
A balanced first quarter saw seven Blazers find the scoring column and a 7-0 run to close out the frame gave UAB a 21-12 lead after the first.
Behind six points each from Walsh and Weathersby, the Blazers outscored the Owls 18-12 in the second quarter and led 39-24 at the half. Walsh had four first half 3-pointers and led the Blazers with 12 at the half. Weathersby added eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.
UAB scored the first two points of the third quarter, but the Owls then went on a 10-0 run to get back in the game, making the score 41-34 at the media timeout. UAB ended the run and FAU ultimately only outscored UAB 16-13 in the third as the Blazers carried a 52-40 lead into the fourth.
UAB's lead would reach 14 points in the fourth quarter on three separate occasions and the Blazers cruised to a 12-point victory to open conference play.
The Blazers are next in action on Jan. 3 at Bartow Arena against Memphis. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
