McNeese Runs Past UAB MBB, 81-60

BIRMINGHAM – McNeese State dominated UAB men's basketball, 81-60, with a big second half on Tuesday night at Bartow Arena. Shahada Wells scored 36 points for the Cowboys, including 26 in the second half.
The teams combined to shoot 34 percent from the field in a sloppy first half. The Blazers led 21-13 after Efrem "Butta" Johnson hit a midrange jumper to cap a 10-2 UAB run. However, the Cowboys scored the next six points while UAB went scoreless for the next three minutes. The Blazers led 31-30 at the break.
Shahada Wells took over in the second half. Wells made six of his first seven attempts in the second period to help the Cowboys take a double-digit lead at 58-45.
The Blazers did not have a response to the Cowboys in the second half, shooting only 25 percent from the field. McNeese was able to extend its lead to as many as 22 points while UAB made only one field goal over the final eight minutes.

The Blazers will take on Southern Miss on Friday, December 1 at 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena. At halftime of the contest, there will be a Teddy Bear Toss to be included in UAB IT's Toy Drive and will be donated to the U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots campaign. Fans that bring teddy bears or other stuffed animals will receive a $10 ticket at the gate.

- Daniel Ortiz scored a season high 20 points while shooting 7-for-8 from the free throw line.
- Tuesday's defeat was the largest margin of defeat for the Blazers at Bartow Arena since February 11, 2017 vs. Old Dominion.
- UAB shot below 30 percent from the field for the first time since January 9, 2013 against UCF.
