BIRMINGHAM – UAB Offensive Coordinator Alex Mortensen has been named a nominee for the Broyles Award, which is annually presented to the nation's top assistant coach.
Mortensen, who is in his first year as an offensive coordinator and handling playing calling duties, is currently leading the most prolific offense in school history as the Blazers are on pace to set the school record for most offensive yards per game (438.9). The Blazers have put up more than 600 yards of offense twice this season.
Individually, Mortensen has guided quarterback Jacob Zeno to one of the best single seasons in school history. Zeno has already set the single season school record for completions (243) and is on pace to set the record for completion percentage and passing yards.
Additionally, running back Jermaine Brown Jr. has had a dynamic final year as a Blazer and just became UAB's career leader in all-purpose yards. Wide receiver Amare Thomas is also just two catches shy of becoming the school record holder for single season receptions by a freshman. Thomas has 48 receptions this season and is chasing Frantell Forrest who had 49 in 2007.
Mortensen and the Blazers have two games remaining this season, beginning this Saturday, Nov. 18, against Temple. UAB then concludes the season at North Texas on Nov. 25.
