ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy outscored the UAB football team 21-0 in the fourth quarter which propelled the Midshipmen to a 31-6 victory on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
With Navy leading 10-6 midway through the third quarter, the Midshipmen used a 20-play, 80-yard drive which took up over 12 minutes on the clock for a 17-6 lead, then added a 50-yard rush and a 97-yard interception return for the 31-6 victory.
The loss drops UAB to 3-7 on the season and 2-4 in the AAC. Navy is now 4-5 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Navy outgained UAB 363-321 and had 269 rushing yards, but despite those number, UAB's defense kept the Blazers in the game. Keondre Swoopes made a huge impact with five tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and an interception. Jackson Bratton led the unit with a season-high tying 11 tackles.
On offense, Jermaine Brown Jr. became UAB's career leader in all-purpose yards (4,672) and Jacob Zeno set the UAB single season record for completions (243), but the Blazers were unable to find consistency on offense the entire evening and only managed two fields for the game.
Navy struck first on a 45-yard pass from Xavier Arline to Regis Velez with 2:49 left in the first for a 7-0 lead. However, Swoopes made two huge defensive plays in the first to keep UAB in the game with an interception in the end zone and a forced fumble which he recovered.
Matt Quinn connected on two field goals of 37 and 29 yards as the two teams went into the locker room with Navy leading 7-6.
Following a Zeno interception early in the third which was returned 42 yards into the UAB red zone, the Blazer defense held Navy to three on that possession as the Midshipmen led 10-6 with 9:13 left in the third.
On the next UAB possession, Navy forced a punt with 7:52 left, and then used a 20-play, 80-yard drive which ate up 12:44 off the clock and capped it with a 2-yard touchdown run to gain a 17-6 advantage with 10:08 left in the fourth.
A 50-yard rush from Arline with 4:12 left made the score 24-6 and then Rayuan Lane returned his fourth interception of the year 97 yards with 2:03 left.
The Blazers return to Protective Stadium next Saturday to host Temple on Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
