BIRMINGHAM – Senior Khavish Varadan has been named the American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Month for September, as announced by league officials on Wednesday.
Varadan, who entered his senior season with the second lowest stroke average in school history only behind Graeme McDowell, is off to a blazing start this season, recording two top five finishes and shooting -11 and -8, respectively, in his two September tournaments.
Varadan opened the campaign by tying for second place overall at the Argent Financial Classic in Louisiana. He shot 72-68-65 = 205, -11 in that tournament and led UAB to a first-place finish.
He followed that up by tying for fourth place at the Graeme McDowell Invitational in which he shot 74-65-69 = 208 (-8), and once again helped UAB win the team title.
Varadan has shot at or under par in five of his six rounds played this season, including firing a seven-under 65 twice. UAB is 26-0-2 overall as a team with first place finishes in both of its tournaments.
"Khavish has gotten himself off to a great start in his final year and I couldn't be more pleased for him," Head Coach Matt Whall said. "He's worked hard to rehab a severe injury and rediscover some of his best stuff and it's starting to show. He's improving as the days go on and this is a nice springboard to push on for one of his best years yet."
Varadan and the Blazers are back in action next week, Oct. 8-10 at the Carolina Cup hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C.
