Blazers Fall to the Mustangs in Straight Sets

DALLAS – UAB Volleyball fell to SMU on Friday Night in Moody Coliseum for their first non-divisional matchup of the weekend. The Blazers fell in straight sets to the Mustangs, tallying 23 kills on 94 attempts. Chloe Rodriguez led the team in kills with eight, scoring the most points for the Green and Gold.
The Blazers sit at a record of 3-21 and 1-11 in conference play.
IN THE SETS
In the first set, the Green and Gold found themselves trailing SMU by as few as four points before rallying back from a set of runs. The Mustangs extended the lead to nine points with a score of 19-8 before UAB responded with a run to reach the ten-point mark. The Blazers would score six more points before the Mustangs claimed set one 25-16.
The second set saw the Blazers remain in close quarters with the Mustangs, including a hook shot from Madison Page early to keep UAB within three. The Blazers got within one before the Mustangs responded with a 7-0 run to jump in front 20-10. The Green and Gold responded with a series of kills to close the scoring margin to seven, but the Mustangs maintained the lead and set 25-14.
In the final set, UAB and SMU continued the close-quarters competition, with the Green and Gold remaining within a point before a 7-0 run put SMU ahead 15-7. The Blazers put up another three points to SMU's four, keeping the Green and Gold ten points behind the Mustangs. With SMU maintaining the lead, the Blazers trailed 10-20 before a pair of attack errors put UAB within seven of the Mustangs.
With SMU leading, the Blazers began to creep back, utilizing Chloe Rodriguez to score three of the five points the Blazers put up in the final points of the set. SMU continued, reaching set point but being halted by a service ace from Brooklyn Allison before claiming the set 25-18.
IN THE BOX
- The Blazers and Mustangs were neck-and-neck in four statistical categories, including aces and blocks.
- The Blazers and Mustangs both tallied five aces. SMU out-blocked the Blazers by one.
- Chloe Rodriguez led the team in kills with eight, hitting .211 and scoring 8.5 points throughout the match.
- The Green and Gold took advantage of errors from the Mustangs in the final set, where they put up six.
