BIRMINGHAM – Freshman Seb Cave of the UAB men's golf team has played in two collegiate tournaments and has now won both after capturing the individual title at the Carolina Cup on Tuesday in Spartanburg, S.C.
His title at the Carolina Cup comes on the heels of winning the Graeme McDowell Invitational two weeks ago at Limestone Springs. The Melbourne, England native was just one of two players to finish the tournament under par and his five-under 67 in the final round (which included an eagle on 18) propelled him to victory. Cave shot -4 for the tournament.
Through two tournaments, Cave now carries a stroke average of 69.6 and has been at or under par in five of his six rounds played, including shooting in the 60s three times.
Cave helped the Blazers to a third-place team finish and UAB now boasts an overall of record of 38-2-2 this season.
Along with Cave (75-70-67 = 212, -4), Khavish Varadan finished in a tie for ninth place overall and moved up 20 spots in the final round with a three-under 69. Varadan (73-77-69 = 219, +3) has now finished top 10 in all three tournaments so far this year.
Sophomore John Bruce (73-72-78 = 223, +7) finished in a tie for 22nd, while Paul Bruce (79-73-78 = 230, +14) tied for 46th.
Freshman Will Stelt (80-79-78 = 237, +21) rounded out the team effort in a tie for 67th, while freshman Trace Bracknell (71-75-78 = 224, +8), who was playing as an individual, tied for 28th overall.
The Blazers conclude their fall schedule at the Steelwood Collegiate hosted by South Alabama in Loxley, Ala. on Oct. 28-29.
