Big 4th Quarter Lifts Rice Past UAB 67-57

BIRMINGHAM – Rice overcame a 12-point 3rd quarter deficit in its 67-57 victory over UAB on Saturday afternoon.
Margaret Whitley led the Blazers (10-10, 2-9 C-USA) with 14 points. Maria Roters and Desiree Ware each scored 10 points and Denim DeShields led all players with nine assists.
India Bellamy scored a game-high 21 points and Jazzy Barnett-Owens added 17 points – both off the bench – for the Owls (14-5, 5-5 C-USA). Destiny Jackson grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and had eight assists.
The first two quarters remained close, as it was a two-possession contest throughout. Emily Klaczek's 3-pointer with 1:25 in the 2nd quarter gave UAB its largest lead of the half at six points before Bellamy's layup closed out the scoring, sending the game into the halftime with UAB ahead 34-30.
Back-to-back layups by Ware gave UAB a 12-point lead at 44-32 at the 7:32 mark of the 3rd quarter. However, Barnett-Owens would answer with an and-1 and a 3-point pointer to close the gap to 44-38. Rice ended the quarter on a 10-2 run to make the score 50-50 heading into the final frame.
Bellamy opened the scoring in the 4th quarter with a layup, but Sara Bershers countered with a 3-pointer to put the Blazers up 53-52 with 9:10 left in regulation. Down 61-57 inside of a minute, UAB committed four consecutive turnovers. Rice hit 6-of-6 free throws to finish the game.
The Blazers hit the road for a pair of games against Florida Atlantic on Feb. 2 and FIU on Feb.4. The next home game is Feb. 9 against North Texas. This is UAB's Education Day. Tip time is 11 a.m.
