Blazer Nation,
Happy New Year and Go Blazers!
The 2022 year ended in spectacular fashion with a win at the HomeTown Lenders Bahamas Bowl and naming Trent Dilfer as UAB Football's seventh head coach in program history. I don't recall a time when our fans were this excited about UAB Football, and as we prepare to transition into the American Athletic Conference this year, I wanted to thank you for helping us get to this point! Coach Dilfer has been assembling his staff and recruiting since his arrival, and I am excited about what is happening on both fronts. Mark your calendars for 205 Day and come out to meet Coach Dilfer, his staff, and hear an in-depth preview of the signing class while discussing the future of UAB Football. The event is on February 5th at Iron City and doors will open at 4:30 p.m. Get your tickets here before they sell out! Additionally, 2023 UAB Football season tickets are on sale now starting at just $99. Please renew your seats or purchase today and get your friends and coworkers to do the same. It's an exciting time for Blazer Football!
Men's and women's basketball have both started conference play in their last season as members of Conference USA. Be sure to support the ladies on January 28th when they take on Rice for National Girls and Women in Sports Day and partner with the UAB National Alumni Society for Alumni Day. Come out to Bartow Arena to support the men's team for a Green Out on January 21st when they take on North Texas. The first 4,000 fans through the door will get a t-shirt courtesy of The UAB Bookstore. Visit UABSports.com for more information and to purchase your tickets in advance of both events.
It may come as no surprise to you that once again, our Fall 2022 GPA was outstanding. Blazer student-athletes posted a combined 3.31 GPA for the Fall 2022 semester. With over 450 student-athletes, more than 300 had over a 3.0 GPA. As we like to say in the south, it ain't braggin' if it's true…and our student-athletes continue to prove how incredible they are in the classroom. We couldn't be prouder of their hard work on and off the court!
Earlier today, we announced Lisa Mann as the fourth women's soccer head coach in program history. Lisa arrives in the Magic City after spending the last four seasons as the head coach at West Virginia State University where she started the program and led the Yellow Jackets to a 40-15-4 record, a Mountain East Conference championship, and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. I am thrilled to have Lisa Mann lead our program and build upon the progress we have made in the last six years.
As the spring semester begins, our department will continue to prepare for our transition to the American Athletic Conference and officially join the new league on July 1, 2023. This transition has included a detailed analysis of facilities, operations and staffing. We have big plans to be competitive on day one and need you with us. Please become a member of Blazer Boosters in addition to purchasing 2023 season tickets to invest in the success of our student-athletes and coaches. As a reminder, fans, businesses, alumni and others within the community can also connect with our student-athletes through the UAB Local Exchange as we continue to invest in the NIL landscape. This is an exciting time for UAB Athletics and a pivotal year as our programs prepare to take the next step leading into the 2023-24 athletic seasons.
Thanks for all that you do to make us great. With your support, we Win As One! Go Blazers!
