BIRMINGHAM - Conference USA announced that Asha Zuniga is the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
The senior captain scored the game-winning goal in UAB's 1-0 victory at FIU and anchored a defensive line that had a pair of clean sheets and only allowed two total shots on goal in the Blazers' two victories last week.
This is Zuniga's second DPOW honor this season as she took home the award on Aug. 23.
In C-USA play this season, the UAB defense has allowed only one goal and is second in the league with a 0.33 goals against average.
"This is a great honor for Asha," said head coach Erica Demers. "She stepped up massively with a huge goal against FIU to get a hard fought road win and her along with Eve Beyer, Sidney McGregor and Canby Biddle did work on Sunday to keep FAU at bay and help us win the game 1-0. It was awesome to have back-to-back shoutout performances last week."
First place UAB (6-2-2, 3-0-0) travels to UTEP on Sept. 29 and North Texas on Oct. 2. The next home match is against UTSA on Oct. 9 at noon.
