BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Cross Country team is set to open the 2022 season on Friday, Sept. 2 at the Foothills Invitational at Choccolocco Park in Oxford, Ala. The Women's 4K is set to begin at 6 p.m.
"The team this year is a mix of newcomers and returners, each group bringing racing experience that will make the season opener exciting. I'm looking forward to seeing this group work together through the race as they have been in training." said head coach Maryn Lowry. Lowry enters her second season with the Blazers, having high expectations for the incoming class.
UAB welcomes five freshmen to the roster and returns seven upperclassmen. "Lauren Robinson and Britney Johnson are two of our top returners from the 2021 season and seniors on the team. Kathleen Schellman, another top returner from the 2021 season, and Kyra Hayes, a freshman from Tennessee, have been working well together in training and will be ones to watch this season." said Coach Lowry.
This is the first appearance for the Blazers at the Foothills invitational. They join teams among the likes of host, Jacksonville State, Auburn, Georgia State, Troy and Western Kentucky. A total of 25 teams will be competing.
Last season, the Blazers finished eighth at the Conference USA Championships and finished 24th at the NCAA South Regional in 2021. UAB was picked to finish fifth in the 2022 Preseason Poll, announced by Conference USA on Tuesday.
