BIRMINGHAM – As the UAB men's golf team heads to NCAA Regionals for the 14th time in program history, Nick Robillard has one final opportunity to cement his legacy as one of the all-time greats at UAB.
And the greats are really great.
There have been five Blazers to win Conference USA Golfer of the Year: Chris Devlin, Graeme McDowell, Zack Sucher, Paul Dunne and … Nick Robillard. That's good company.
A career that started off unassuming as a walk-on, Robillard contributed as a freshman and sophomore in the back of UAB's lineup, but the Birmingham native decided to redshirt heading into his junior year. That year away from competition paid off majorly.
Robillard returned to the lineup for the 2020-21 season on fire en route to posting the school's 10th lowest single-season stroke average (72.1) and leading UAB to a 24th place finish at NCAA Nationals, while earning C-USA Golfer of the Year.
Not to be outdone, Robillard enters this year's NCAA Tournament with the school's sixth lowest single season stroke average (71.6) and eighth lowest career stroke average at UAB (73.2).
And all of his successes on the course have been matched in the classroom. Robillard is a two-time Conference USA All-Academic Team member. He was named the 2021 Conference USA Scholar Athlete of the Year and also represented Conference USA at the NCAA Leadership Forum in Indianapolis. A well-rounded student-athlete, to say the least.
Robillard has a talented group of teammates around him as sophomore Khavish Varadan is following in Robillard's footsteps and is also on pace to go down as one of UAB's all-time greats. Alfie Fox and Ethan Hagood have been a consistent presence in the lineup and helped UAB earn a second-straight NCAA berth.
But make no mistake about it, Robillard has not only been the catalyst on the course for UAB these past two years, but he has been the face of an entire Athletic Department and a representation of what embodies the ultimate student-athlete.
And now, he's got his final opportunity to shine on college golf's biggest stage.
