UAB Sweeps Day 2 of Blazer Invite

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB softball team captured two wins on the second day of the Blazer Invite. The Blazers outlasted IUPUI 5-3, and defeated Austin Peay 7-3.
"I am very proud of the fight this team continues to display." Said Coach Joe Guthrie. "We continue to improve and handle adversity. There were many items to learn from this weekend. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn these lessons."
GAME 1: UAB 5, IUPUI 3
The Blazers (7-8) withstood a quick start from IUPUI (2-12), who began the day with a triple, and scored later on to take a 1-0 lead in the early afternoon. UAB responded with a Sierra Frazier RBI double to left field to tie things up at 1-1 at the end of the 1st. IUPUI didn't score in the top of the 2nd, and Mackenzie Droddy recorded a sacrifice fly at the bottom of the 2nd to bring in Alyssa Aguilar, and give the Blazers a 2-1 advantage. Inning number three came and went without any scoring. In the fourth inning, the Jaguars added a run to tie the game on a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Blazer bats found their rhythm, and scored three runs, the first on an error at home plate by the Jaguars, the second coming on an Olivia Valbak RBI, and the third on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Armistead. The Blazers took the lead, and held it for the remainder of the game. The Jaguars scored in the top of the 6th on a home run to make it 5-3, but the Blazers made a double play to end the IUPUI turn at bat. UAB got two hits in the top of the seventh, but didn't get any runs. IUPUI had one last shot to tie the game in the seventh, but went three up, three down to end the game.
Arden Plugge (1-0) notched her first career pitching victory from inside the circle. Bella Wiggins and Tyler Armistead each had a stolen base.
GAME 2: UAB 7, Austin Peay 3
The second game of the day saw UAB turn in one of its best hitting performances of the season. The game started off slowly for both teams, with neither team scoring any runs in the first innings. In the top of the 2nd, Lilly Crowe scored thanks to a fielder's choice RBI from Faith Hegh. In the top of the third, Austin Peay (9-5) took the lead back, via a two RBI triple. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the third, UAB responded with an RBI from Lilly Crowe, to tie things up at 2-2. The 4th inning came and went without any runs, and the game was still tied at 2 heading into inning number five.
At the top of the fifth inning, Austin Peay went three up, three down. In the bottom of the 5th, the Blazers got red hot from home plate, and lit up the scoreboard on a flurry of hits. Tyler Armistead tripled to right field, and scored on a Sierra Frazier RBI shortly afterward. Lilly Crowe hit a triple, and brought Taylor Yeager past home plate. Lindsey Smith doubled, and brought home Lilly Crowe. Smith was then batted in by Faith Hegh. After the 5th, the score was 6-2 in favor of UAB.
At the top of the 5th, the Governors fought hard to get back in the game, but were only able to muster one run, via an RBI.
In the bottom of the sixth, UAB added an insurance run when Bella Wiggins scored via RBI from Lilly Crowe. Austin Peay had one last chance to score, but went three up three down, and the Blazers secured the win, 7-3.
Sarah Cespedes (4-1) was credited with the win from the circle. Tyler Armistead and Lilly Crowe each recorded a triple. Seven Blazers recorded hits, with Lilly Crowe getting four.
The third day of the Blazer Classic, which would have been played tomorrow, has been cancelled due to inclement weather.
