Softball Falls in Eight Innings to Troy

BIRMINGHAM- Softball fell to Troy 6-3 tonight at Mary Bowers Field in their 2022 home opener. Faith Hegh led the Blazers in hitting with a double, and a triple.
UAB (1-5) and Troy (5-1) each had slow starts hitting, and the game was scoreless after two innings. At the top of the third inning, the Trojans got on the board with back-to-back home runs. The Blazers responded in the bottom of the 3rd, with Sophie Page and Lilly Crowe scoring thanks to a triple by Faith Hegh, and Hegh scoring via a Sierra Frazier RBI. With the Blazers up 3-2 in the top of the 4th, the Trojans tied the game with another homerun, this time to center field.
For the next three innings, the game was scoreless, and each team's defense locked the game up at 3 apiece.
At the top of the 8th inning, the Trojans were able to find a rhythm hitting the ball, and got three quick runs, by way of a 2 RBI off a double, and another RBI off a fielder's choice. Olivia Valbak notched a strikeout to end the inning, and the Blazers went to bat down three.
Unfortunately, the Blazers were unable to score in the bottom of the 8th, with two fly ball outs to center field and left field respectively, and a strikeout to end the game.
UAB deployed two pitchers in tonight's contest, Sarah Cespedes starting things off, tallying three hits, three runs allowed, and five strikeouts over four innings. Olivia Valbak took over on the mound for the remaining four innings, and posted two hits, three runs allowed, and five strikeouts. This was the Blazer's third consecutive extra inning game.
The Blazers will host and compete in the Blazer Classic this weekend, with games versus Toledo, North Dakota, and Murray State. The first game will be against Toldeo, first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. Friday, at Mary Bowers Field.
