BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Track and Field team gears up for the 2022-23 season with the release of their schedule by head coach, Kurt Thomas. The Blazers make numerous appearances dotting the south, including Tennessee, Mississippi and the Magic City.
UAB closed out the previous season with great strides in the regular season, with the Blazers finishing with a conference Champion in the Pole Vault (Anna Massa), and a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles (Kat Duren) at C-USA Outdoor Championships.
"We had many memorable performances from last year," said Thomas. "Both Kat and Makiyah's performances at the C-USA indoor championships were clutch, as was Anna Massa setting the C-USA record in Pole Vault. Outdoors, Kat continued to race well, earning runner-up honors at C-USA and qualifying for NCAAs as Anna's second straight C-USA title and NCAA berth. At the outdoor championships, having so many throwers, jumpers, and multis scores in different events was so great, and how you want your team to perform together."
INDOOR SCHEDULE
The Blazers start their season with the BSC Icebreaker on Dec. 2 hosted by Birmingham Southern before going on winter break. They return to action on Jan. 13, where they'll host the Blazer Invitational on Friday, followed by the Vulcan Invitational the following day.
UAB will remain in Birmingham, where they'll participate in the Samford Multi-Invitational. The following week, the Blazers will travel to Louisville where they'll compete at the PNC Bank Lenny Lyles Invite, hosted by the Cardinals.
The Blazers take a few weeks off before traveling to Nashville, home of the Vanderbilt Commodores on Feb. 10-11 to close out their regular season at the Music City Challenge. They return to the Magic City, where they'll host the C-USA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.
National competition for indoor track and field kicks off March 10-11 in Albuquerque, hosted by the University of New Mexico.
OUTDOOR SCHEDULE
A week following the NCAA meet, the Blazers return to action on March 17, where they'll travel to Auburn to compete in the Auburn Tiger Invite. The Blazers then travel to the Magnolia state, where they will compete at the Al Schmidt Relays in Starkville.
After their road trips, the Blazers return home to host the UAB Spring Invite on March 31 to April 1 before traveling to Tennessee, where they'll make their appearance at the Tennessee Relays on April 6. UAB takes a few weeks off before traveling to Tuscaloosa to run in the Alabama Crimson Classic on April 21.
The Green and Gold finish the regular season at the Maroon and White Invite hosted by Mississippi State, before traveling to Denton to participate at the C-USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships; the Blazers aim to qualify for the NCAA East Prelims, hosted in Jacksonville, Fla. from May 24-27.
"Our home meet is always a meet we want to do well in front of friends and family. But the Tennessee Relays will be a big one, as well as C-USA Outdoors. But we want our athletes to perform at a high level at the end of the season. Whether that be at the conference championships in May or NCAAs for individuals who qualify." said Thomas.
National Championships will begin on June 7 through 10 in Austin, Texas.
