Blake Shrader Named Nominee for Broyles Award

BIRMINGHAM β Defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator Blake Shrader has been named a nominee for the Broyles Award, which is annually given to the nation's top assistant coach.

Shrader is one of 51 coaches on the list and just one of 12 who is not an offensive or defensive coordinator.

Shrader has led a pass defense that is one of the most elite in the nation. UAB has not allowed a 300-yard passer this entire season and has held nine of 10 QBs under 215 passing yards while allowing just a 56 percent completion rate.

The Blazers currently rank 11th nationally in pass efficiency defense and 18th in passing yards allowed per game.

Since Shrader was named the defensive backs coach in 2017, UAB has finished top 10 nationally in passing yards allowed twice and top 15 three times.

UAB is coming off a performance in which they held Conference USA's top ranked offense in North Texas to 239 yards under their season average. UNT quarterback Austin Aune was just 15-of-32 for 159 yards.

The Blazers head to Death Valley this Saturday to face No. 6 LSU. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
