BIRMINGHAM – UAB Cross Country finishes the regular season with the conclusion of the Blazer Classic and enters the postseason with Conference USA Cross Country Championships just around the corner.
The Blazers will travel to Denton, Texas, home of UNT, where they will compete on Oct. 29. The Women's 6K starts at 9 a.m., and the Men's 8K will follow immediately after at 10 a.m. UAB is one of 11 teams competing in the championships, where they take on the likes of defending champs, MTSU, Charlotte and Rice.
"We're looking to improve on our placement from last year. That will always be the goal," said head coach Maryn Lowry "We have depth this year, which will help us in achieving that goal of placing higher. Lauren Charlton and Kyra Hayes continue to give us a strong 1-2 with Kathleen Schellman and Lauren Robinson right behind them. We have a great pack consisting of Sangie Lincoln-Velez, Ava Brooks, Gracie Sears, and Anna Behmer that rounds out our top eight."
The Blazers finished eighth in the 2021 Championships, with former Blazer Agok Ayuen crossing the finish line first for the Green and Gold with a time of 22:26.9, followed by Laura Thompson with a time of 22:27.1.
UAB looks to improve on last year's finish, aiming to inch to a higher placement and chasing NCAA South Regionals. Regionals will be held on Nov. 11 at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Ala., where the Blazers had their first race for the 2022 season.
