BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The UAB football team was outscored 10-0 in the second half and ultimately fell 20-17 at WKU on Friday night at Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium.
UAB (4-3, 2-2 C-USA) held WKU (5-3, 3-1 C-USA) to 145 yards and 20 points under its season averages, but four Blazer turnovers on offense proved to be the difference in the game.
The nation's leading rusher DeWayne McBride carried the ball 24 times for 197 yards and has now rushed for over 100 yards in every game this season. McBride is averaging 162.5 yards per game.
Noah Wilder led a stout defensive effort with 14 tackles and moved into fourth place on UAB's career tackles list with 298. The Blazers held the nation's fourth leading passer Austin Reed to just 128 yards through the air, which was 210 under his average. The Blazer defense also logged six pass breakups and a forced fumble.
UAB struck on its first possession as Dylan Hopkins found Samario Rudolph on a 3rd-and-5 which Rudolph turned into a 59-yard catch and run down the sideline. Hopkins would be sidelined for the remainder of the game on UAB's second possession.
WKU tied it up early in the second on a 20-yard quarterback keeper by Austin Reed, but UAB scored the next 10 points, highlighted by a spectacular 14-yard touchdown catch by Fred Farrier II with 8:59 left in the half. WKU added a field goal late to make the score 17-10 at halftime in favor of UAB.
The Hilltoppers outscored the Blazers 10-0 in the third quarter and led 20-17 entering the final stanza. A Blazer fumble was returned to the UAB five yard line and WKU punched it in two plays later for its first lead of the game.
UAB had a chance to tie or take the lead late in the fourth within the WKU red zone, but an interception at the goal line ended the UAB threat as WKU ran for three first downs to end the game.
The Blazers are back in action next Saturday night at Florida Atlantic on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST/6 p.m. CST.
