WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
- The Blazers and 49ers are meeting for the third time in program history and for the last time as Conference USA affiliates as both schools make the switch to the American Athletic Conference on July 1, 2023.
- UAB looks to extend its five-game home winning streak this Saturday. The Blazers have played extremely well in front of their home fans since returning to action in 2017 with an overall record of 27-3 in Birmingham and 6-2 at Protective Stadium.
- The Blazers' current averages of total yards per game (436.8), rushing yards per game (236.4) and points per game (34.6) are on pace to set single season school records. UAB faces a Charlotte team this weekend that ranks 130th in total defense and rushing defense.
- Running backs DeWayne McBride and Jermaine Brown Jr. combined for 234 rushing yards last week on just 22 combined carries. These two form a lethal 1-2 punch in the backfield and have combined for 1,012 of UAB's 1,182 rushing yards and 12 of the 15 rushing touchdowns.
- McBride is the nation's leader in rushing yards per game (160.2) and has rushed for over 100 yards in every game this season. Dating back to last year, McBride has scored at least one rushing touchdown in 11 straight games and has 21 total rushing touchdowns during that span.
- The offensive line helped UAB gain a season-high 303 rushing yards last week against the then top-ranked rushing defense in Conference USA. UAB is averaging 236.4 rushing yards per game (9th nationally) and faces a 49ers rushing defense that is allowing 253.3 yards on the ground.
- Quarterback Dylan Hopkins is coming off a season-high 278 passing yards against Middle Tennessee. For the season, he has thrown for 939 yards, five touchdowns and one interception while completing 67 percent of his passes.
- Trea Shropshire is the reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week after going for six catches, 193 yards and a touchdown on Saturday. He and Hopkins have re-established their connection from last year over the last two games as Shropshire has 10 catches for 258 yards and two touchdowns in his last two outings. He is currently leading the nation in yards per catch (28.55 – 11 catches, 314 yards)
- Defensively, UAB will have to contend with Charlotte's record setting quarterback Chris Reynolds. Reynolds holds all of Charlotte's passing records and has thrown for over 300 yards with at least four touchdowns in two of their last three games (401 yards, 5 TD vs. Georgia State, 347 yards, 4 TD vs. UTEP). Reynolds was injured in the first game this season but has appeared in four games and has thrown for 1,087 yards (271.8/game), 13 touchdowns and four interceptions.
- He will be tested by the nation's second ranked pass defense as UAB enters the game allowing just 168.6 yards through the air. The Blazers have been stout in the passing game with opposing quarterbacks completing just 53.6 percent of their passes.
- UAB has seven interceptions this season by six different players. Most recently, Grayson Cash tallied his seventh career interception, which moved him into a tie for eighth place on UAB's career interceptions list.
- Overall, UAB ranks 23rd nationally in total defense, tied for 16th in red zone defense and tied for 24th in first down defense.
