Down four with no timeouts remaining, UAB's defense forced a three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense with 1:07 remaining. However, the Rice defense got three-consecutive sacks on second, third and fourth down to seal the victory.
UAB (2-2, 0-1 C-USA) outgained the Owls 360-209 behind a season-high 231 passing yards from Dylan Hopkins and 121 rushing yards from DeWayne McBride.
For McBride, it was his fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing game dating back to last season and he moved into sixth place on UAB's career rushing list with 2,331 yards. McBride is averaging 173.6 rushing yards per game this season.
Tyler Taylor led the defensive charge with a career-high 12 tackles, while Jaylen Key (career-high) and Noah Wilder added eight.
Rice (3-2, 1-0 C-USA) used an 11-play drive on the first possession of the game and after review, it was ruled that the Owls crossed the goal line on 4th-and-goal from the one for an early 7-0 lead.
The Blazers then scored 17 unanswered points and led 17-7 at halftime. With Rice at their own one yard line, Wilder forced a fumble which Sanders recovered, and on the next play McBride scored from three yards out to tie the game at 7-7 late in the first.
Matt Quinn gave the Blazers a 10-7 lead on a 43-yard field goal at the 12:23 mark of the second quarter, and following a 71-yard reception from Tejhaun Palmer, Samario Rudolph hauled in his first touchdown reception of the season to put the Blazers up 10.
UAB outgained Rice 208-75 in first half. Hopkins was 10-of-12 for 152 yards and a touchdown, while the defense had three sacks and three pass breakups in the first 30 minutes.
Rice took the lead by scoring 14 points in 18 seconds midway through the third quarter. The first touchdown was a 3-yard run from Ari Broussard, and the next UAB offensive snap was a backwards pass which Rice scooped up at the 4-yard line and ran into the end zone for a 21-17 lead.
The Blazers regained the lead with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Hopkins to Trea Shropshire to give UAB a 24-21 lead with 2:36 left in the third.
Rice then surged ahead with a 6-yard touchdown receptions by Dean Conners, and that would be the final points of the game as Rice got the defensive stops down the stretch.
UAB is back in action next Saturday, Oct. 8 against Middle Tennessee. Kickoff from Protective Stadium is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
