UAB Men's Tennis Wraps Up Play at Samford Fall Invite

HOMEWOOD, Ala. – The UAB men's tennis team finished its opening event of the 2021 fall season on Sunday evening, concluding three days of action at the Samford Fall Invite No. 1 in Homewood.
In total, the Blazers earned 10 combined victories in their first competition under first-year head coach Justin DeSanto. The Green and Gold captured seven singles victories and three doubles victories over the weekend, sweeping their pair of doubles matches on Sunday.
Junior Thanos Spyropoulos and sophomore Nikola Puric teamed up to defeat Southern Miss' Christopher Cahour and Olimjon Nabiev 6-2 in their doubles match on Sunday. Fellow Blazers Vojtech Podzemny and Martin Vasquez finished off the doubles sweep with a 7-5 victory over Samford's Matthew Gooch and Harrison Williams.
In singles, Podzemny and Vasquez each earned a win apiece in the final day of tournament action. Podzemny defeated Georgia Southern's Pol Del Castillo Masich in straight sets 7-5, 6-4, while Vasquez rallied from a first-set loss to capture a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9) win over Southern Miss' Pasawee Reansuwong.
UAB's best day of singles play came on Saturday with three Blazers earning singles victories. Podzemny opened the day with a comeback win, defeating Samford's Harrison Williams 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10). Puric then added to the Blazers' win column with a straight-set triumph of 6-3, 6-1 over Samford's Timothy Dixon.
Sophomore Chase Parker then notched his first win of the weekend with a commanding 6-0, 6-3 victory over Samford's Andrew Bingham to close out singles' action on Saturday.
UAB also recorded a pair of singles victories and one doubles win on Friday. Podzemny tallied a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) triumph over Kennesaw State's Kevin Patel, while Vasquez earned his first victory as a Blazer with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 result against Samford's Andrew Bingham.
The doubles pairing of Podzemny and Vasquez closed out the tournament's opening day of action with a 7-6 win over Georgia Southern's Tao Castillo and Pol Del Castillo Masich.
The Blazers will return to the court on Friday when the Blazers travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for a weekend tournament at Southern Miss.
