UAB Women's Basketball, Baseball and Softball Each Earn C-USA Academic Excellence Awards

BIRMINGHAM – UAB's women's basketball, softball and baseball teams have each earned the Conference USA Academic Excellence Award for the 2020-21 season, the league office announced on Wednesday.

The C-USA sport academic awards are given to those programs with the highest team GPA in their respective sports.

The women's basketball and softball teams are both repeat winners.

Women's Basketball
This is the third time in four years the UAB women's basketball team has earned this conference award.

The Blazers posted a 3.58 GPA for the academic year and all 15 of UAB's women's basketball players were named to the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. Caitlynn Daniels, Emily Frasco, Summer Schloss and Maddie Walsh were also C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medals recipients, which is awarded to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

"I'm extremely proud of our team and the work they have put in the classroom," head coach Randy Norton said.

"The resilience the team showed after dealing with all of the challenges of playing in season impacted by a pandemic was amazing. This award reflects the tremendous character of our team and program."

Baseball
The Blazer baseball team earned a 3.33 cumulative GPA.

Twenty-nine baseball student-athletes were named to the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. Brady Greene, Hunter Hill, Tanner Rusk and Colton Schultz were the team's four C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medals recipients.

In 2020, the UAB baseball team was one of just three C-USA teams to earn the annual American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) award, given to ABCA member programs with a 3.0 GPA or above on a 4.0 scale.

Softball
The UAB softball team finished the academic year with a 3.76 GPA.

Twenty-four softball student-athletes were named to the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll. Sam Bean, Sarah Cespedes, Lilly Crowe, Brooke Davis, Sadie Frazier, Sierra Frazier, Jenna Olszewski, Arden Plugge, Olivia Valbak and Amy Woodham each also earned C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medals.

"I can't say enough about the work our players have done on and off the field," head coach Joe Guthrie said.

"Simply fantastic by our all our players. Special thank you to our academic advisor Josh Young and director of student athlete services Ramone Cooper."
