BIRMINGHAM – UAB infielder Chandler Simpson was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, the league announced on Tuesday.
"Chandler is well deserving to be named to the C-USA All-Freshman team," head coach Perry Roth said. "What he did after starting the season injured and how he played in one of the top baseball conferences in the country deserves recognition."
Simpson appeared in all 54 games and made 47 starts, all at second base. He was ranked as one of the toughest to strikeout in the nation, with only 16 on the season.
The East Point, Ga. native was second on the team with a .288 batting average. Simpson's conference-leading 24 stolen bases ranks 10th all-time in a single season in program history. In addition, he had 51 hits, six doubles, two triples and 20 RBIs.
Defensively, Simpson helped turn a team-high 20 double plays and finished the year with 100 assists. The freshman had 10 four assists games and one five assist contest.
"There's no real secret to his success," Roth added. "Chandler is very talented and is as hard of worker as you can be. He earns his success. We have had a player named to the All- Freshman team 11 out of my 14 years they have given out the award and we are thankful Chandler adds to the list."
