Late Goals Power UTEP Past UAB 2-1

EL PASO – After leading for 80 consecutive minutes, the UAB women's soccer team fell to UTEP 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Blazers got on the board 44 seconds into regulation on a UTEP own goal. They controlled the tempo of the 1st half, registering seven shots – five on goal, over the first 45 minutes. The defense clamped down on the Miners, only allowing a pair of shots, both of which were high of the goal.
UAB had a chance to go ahead by two scores in the 22nd minute, but UTEP keeper Emily Parrott turned away back-to-back shots from Sarah Buse and Laura Zemberyova. Parrott also stopped Conference USA's leading scorer Lexxe Lipsey twice in the 1st half.
The Miners came out in the 2nd half with a pair of shots that were saved by Blazers' keeper Anika Toth in the first four minutes. UTEP kept the pressure on Toth, firing three more shots that could not get past her by the 63rd minute.
Both teams had limited shots until a foul was called on UAB in the 82nd minute, resulting in a penalty kick. Tessa Carlin converted, giving the Miners the equalizer.
UTEP would strike again 2:24 later when Jackie Soto and Vic Bohdan set up Adriana Lopez for the game-winner.
The Miners outshot UAB 11-1 the 2nd half. Both Toth and Parrott finished the day with five saves.
The Blazers (6-3-1, 1-1-0 C-USA) return to BBVA Field on March 21 when they host UTSA at noon.
BBVA Field will accommodate fans with social distancing measures in place.
Fans will be asked to practice social distancing and sit in available seats. Masks are required at all times per state and county ordinance.
