BIRMINGHAM - Former UAB goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty has signed a professional contract with Djurgården IF Fotbollsförening (DIF) of the Allsvenskan League in Sweden.
Daugherty inked the deal with Djurgården in January, but due to travel restrictions and visa approval, she arrived in Sweden earlier this month.
"It has been very welcoming experience since I arrived," said Daugherty. "I am excited to get started. We are looking forward to some preseason matches to prepare for the season starting in April."
"Kelsey is an explosive goalkeeper who is really good both in close play and on shots from outside," said DIF sports director Jean Balawo.
Prior to landing in Sweden, Daugherty was a member of the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League.
As a Blazer, Daugherty graduated as one of UAB's most decorated student-athletes. She capped her senior season by being named Conference USA Goalkeeper of the Year, First Team All-Conference, United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First Team and was a member of the Conference USA All-Academic First Team.
She finished her career as UAB's all-time leader in saves with 351, second in shutouts with 16, third with a goals against average of 1.35 and fourth with 28 victories.
After graduating from UAB, Daugherty signed her first professional contract in June 2019 with Fortuna Hjørring of the Elitedivisionen league in Denmark, where she played in 13 contests.
The Blazers (2-2-0) return to action on Feb. 14 when they host North Alabama at BBVA Field. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
BBVA Field will accommodate fans with social distancing measures in place.
Fans will be asked to practice social distancing and sit in available seats. Masks are required at all times per state and county ordinance.
