Denton, Texas — The UAB volleyball team cruised to a series sweep Monday afternoon following a 3-0 win against North Texas.
"To come home with two road wins against a team that had traditionally finished at the top of the league, is a true testament to the work our team has done through the fall and start of the spring," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "It is great to grow while picking up some great road wins."
The Blazers (3-2, 2-0) piled up eight blocks to double up North Texas' four. UAB had 10 service aces, including seven by Brianna Muller.
"We knew there were adjustments to be made from the first night and we executed them at key moments in today's match," Freeburg added.
The first set the Mean Green (1-4, 0-2) opened up an a three-point run. UAB came back to tie the set at four off a kill by Chloe Rodriguez. The set was tight until the Blazers went on a 12-point run to go up 21-12. A late push by North Texas came up short as UAB took the set point, 25-18.
In the second set, North Texas was up 22-16 and the Blazers won the next five points to bring it within one, 22-21. The two teams traded points to tie the set at 24. The Blazers took the final two points to win the set, 28-26.
"We had to claw our way back in set two and we are proud of the toughness that the Blazers displayed in that moment," said Freeburg.
UAB opened set three 4-1, but North Texas battled back to tie it at four. Following a five-point run, the Blazers were up 12-5 and never looked back. Tatijana Fucka ended the match on a solo block off an attack attempted by Truli Levy to win the set 25-17 for the 3-0 match and series sweep.
The Blazers return home on Feb. 14 and 15 for two matches against UTEP. The first meeting is set for a 1 p.m. first serve and Feb. 15 is scheduled for 11 a.m. Both matches will be streamed on CUSA.TV.
