BIRMINGHAM - The UAB women's soccer team claimed its first conference win of the season against Southern Miss on Friday night at BBVA Field, as the Blazers overcame the Golden Eagles, 2-1.

"We are excited to get our first three points tonight in conference play," head coach Erica Demers said. "This first game is key for the mentality of our players and I couldn't be happier for them. We are still learning but we will celebrate this first win for the night."

UAB (5-2-1, 1-0-0 C-USA) tallied 18 shots with nine on goal, while Southern Miss (2-2-0, 0-1-0 C-USA) shot 12 times, with seven coming on goal. The Blazers also led in corner kicks (9-1), while Southern Miss committed more fouls (9-8).

Freshman goalkeeper Anika Toth was responsible for six saves, with five coming in the second half.

The Blazers struck first in the 10th minute as Lexxe Lipsey found the back of the net off a free kick assist from Erika Manfre, putting the Green and Gold up, 1-0 early. Lipsey's goal on Friday night was her sixth of the season, the most on the squad.

In the 35th minute, Stella Kiss scored with a header off a cross from Lizzie Hill, giving the Blazers a 2-0 advantage going into the halftime break.

Just two minutes into the second half, Southern Miss earned a penalty kick off a handball in the box and took advantage, as Hailey Pohevitz narrowed the gap to 2-1, the eventual final score.

UAB wraps up non-conference play when its hosts Mississippi State on Mar. 7. This marks the first time since 2015 UAB has hosted a Power 5 team (Louisville) and the first SEC team since Ole Miss in 2013.

BBVA Field will accommodate fans with social distancing measures in place.

Fans will be asked to practice social distancing and sit in available seats. Masks are required at all times per state and county ordinance.
