BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team is set to open the 2021 season this weekend, Feb. 26-27, at the Green Wave Invitational hosted by Tulane in New Orleans.
Under the direction of first year head coach Terri Del Conte, the Blazers face Utah and Tulane on Friday, followed by New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.
The match against Tulane will be the first of 16 CCSA matches this season for UAB, and also the first of three against the Green Wave this year. The other contests this weekend are non-conference matches.
The Blazers look to snap a nine match losing streak against Tulane, who is UAB's most common opponent in school history. The two teams have meet annually since the sport was started in 2012, and Tulane owns a 13-4 advantage in the all-time series.
UAB is 5-0 against the remainder of the field with a 4-0 mark against New Orleans and a 1-0 record against Utah. For Southeastern Louisiana, this is The Lions' first season competing in beach volleyball.
Del Conte's roster features 11 returners from last year's team that finished 5-4, while adding six newcomers to the mix. Veterans SalliAnne Napolitano, Annie Pringle, Emma Andraka and Jenna Gathright have the most experience for the Green and Gold, while players such as Mikayla Law-Heese, Ella Alexander, Arden Copping and Sarah Dickson saw limited action last year before the season was cut short due to COVID-19.
Law-Heese was recently named to the CCSA Preseason Watch List. The redshirt freshman will be at the top of UAB's lineup this year and looks to make a splash with graduate transfer Rachel Tam as her partner entering the first weekend of action.
UAB's first match comes against Utah at 10:30 a.m. CST. All matches will be streamed on YouTube with video available on three different courts. Below are the streaming links:
