Women's Soccer Draws With Samford 1-1

BIRMINGHAM – After a hard fought 110 minutes, UAB and Samford battled to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night at Samford Soccer Stadium.
The Blazers got on the board first when Laura Zemberyova's long pass found Kassandra Daniel in the for a header in the 7th minute.
Three minutes later, keeper Anika Toth made the save of the match when her outstretched arms stopped a shot from the Bulldog's Alyssa Frazier.
UAB would hold Samford off the board the rest of the first half as it took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Samford got the equalizer early in the second half. Taylor Yount picked up a loose ball and was able to bundle it past Toth in the 49th minute.
The game would remain deadlocked the rest of the way despite 20 combined shots taken in the 2nd half and both extra periods.
Toth made a game-saver with 6:27 remaining in the 2nd overtime. She stopped Alex Bice at point blank range, then Yount had an opening, but she took the rebound and hit the right post with her shot.
Lexxe Lipsey had a chance to finish for the Blazers with 2:20 left in the 2nd overtime, but her shot was about an inch high on the right side.
She finished with a team-high six shots. Toth made five saves for the Blazers.
"It was a hard fought game tonight for both teams," said head coach Erica Demers. "Samford's constant work ethic is unreal. They made us uncomfortable and showed us areas we need to improve on before the start of conference season."
UAB will head to Montgomery to play Alabama State on Feb. 21. Kickoff in scheduled for 6 p.m. The next home match will be Feb. 26 when UAB opens the Conference USA slate against Southern Miss. Kickoff against the Golden Eagles is slated for 6 p.m.
BBVA Field will accommodate fans with social distancing measures in place.
Fans will be asked to practice social distancing and sit in available seats. Masks are required at all times per state and county ordinance.
