BIRMINGHAM — The UAB volleyball team dropped a tough match against UTEP on Monday morning, falling to the Miners in a 3-0 sweep.

"UTEP came out today and continued to stress us like they did this whole series," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "They did a great job exposing our weaknesses and we will get back to work on Wednesday with the focus on learning from today."

Redshirt junior Alex Kells had a career day with 17 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Freshman Laney Dale had a team and career-high 12 assists.

"Alex had an outstanding match, and she was ready when her name was called," added Freeburg. "She had a great few weeks of practice leading up to this and her confidence showed. We are really proud of her effort today."

The first set was tied 11 times. The largest lead for either team was four points for UTEP (3-3, 1-1 CUSA) at 21-17. UAB (4-3, 3-1 CUSA) came back with three straight points to bring the set within one, 21-20. The Miners took the set, 25-23, off a kill from Ava Palm.

It was another back-and-forth battle in the second set. The Blazers went on a four-point run to go up 14-11. UTEP went on a 10-1 run to take the set win, 25-18.

UTEP jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set, but the Blazers came back to tie it at nine. The set was tied three times after that point, but the Miners used a late four-point run to take the 25-21 set and match sweep.

Up next, the Blazers will head to Houston, Texas for a two-match series against Rice, Feb. 21 and 22. Both matches are at 1 p.m. and streamed on CUSA.TV.
