BIRMINGHAM- Fernanda Maida added another accolade to her impressive resume this morning when she was named to the South All-Region team by the AVCA.
The AVCA South Region is comprised of 36 teams across Conference USA, SEC, ASUN, Big South, MEAC and Southland conferences. This is Maida's second time being honored as an All-Region selection by the AVCA. Over three seasons, Maida has established herself as one of the best players in program history.
Maida dominated the court this year, scoring 369 kills across 21 matches, to go along with 23 service aces, 154 digs, and 25 blocks. The junior outside hitter from Cochabamba, Bolivia was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the week twice this season. Despite missing four matches with an injury, Maida is currently ranked 6th in the nation in kills per set (4.99). She scored double digit kills in 18 matches, and recorded 20+ kills eight times. After the regular season, Maida was named to the C-USA All-Conference First Team.
Coach Betsy Freeburg said, "It's such an honor for Fern to be recognized by other coaches as one of the best players in our South Region. She is tremendously deserving of this award, and we are proud of her."
