UAB Defeats LA Tech 3-1

RUSTON- UAB Volleyball won in four sets tonight versus Louisiana Tech in Ruston. Alex Kells scored 18 kills, and Sam Gomez scored 13. Lidya Canturk recorded 40 assists, and Erin Powers tallied 18 digs.
The Blazers (10-13, 5-6) started slow in a first set that saw LA Tech (9-18, 1-10) jump out to a quick lead and go on several long scoring runs that put UAB in a deep hole. The Blazers started to get things going, but LA Tech scored four in a row to end the set, 25-9.
In the second set, UAB regained control and put together a powerful offensive performance, including a seven point scoring run, and four kills from Sam Gomez. The Blazers held off LA Tech to take the set 25-22.
The third set also went in the Blazer's favor, with two service aces from Kayla Hardy, and seven kills by Alex Kells, the last of which ended the set, 25-19.
The fourth and final set went down to the wire, with the Blazers again using long scoring runs to take a strong lead, before LA Tech rallied at the end. With the Blazers up 24-19, LA Tech scored four points in a row to make it 24-23, before Chloe Rodriguez got her fifth kill of the set, which ended the set 25-23, and the match 3-1.
"Tonight was certainly a match we feel fortunate to come out of with a win." Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. "Sometimes things are not clicking and that was our offense tonight. Our defensive specialists, Brianna Muller, Kayla Hardy & Erin Powers, were really good as the match wore on from both the serving line and defensively. We look forward to recouping tomorrow and playing better Blazer Volleyball to finish out regular season CUSA."
UAB will play Louisiana Tech again tomorrow in Thomas Assembly Center at 2 p.m.
