UAB Falls in Hard Fought Quarterfinals Match Versus Western Kentucky
11/19/2021 7:35:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORFOLK- UAB Volleyball dropped a tough match against Western Kentucky in the first round of the C-USA tournament. The Blazers (11-14, 6-6) fought hard and performed well, but the Hilltoppers stayed ahead and took the match 3-0.
Fernanda Maida had 15 kills and Chloe Rodriguez had 4 blocks. Lidya Canturk had 23 assists, and Erin Powers chipped in 10 digs.
WKU (25-1, 12-0) started fast, holding a 18-13 lead at a media timeout. Eventually, the Hilltoppers came out on top in the first set 25-16.
In the second set, WKU again rode a quick start to take a 21-11 lead. A Fernanda Maida kill and two WKU service errors gave UAB a chance to rally, but the Hilltoppers finished and secured the set 25-13.
In set 3 it was the Blazers who had a strong start, taking a 5-3 lead. The two squads battled it out, and were at one point knotted up at 10 each. After that, the Hilltopper offense got in gear, and despite a late UAB rally, Western Kentucky won the set 25-15, and the match 3-0.
"We faced a very good WKU team who played extremely well tonight." Said Coach Betsy Freeburg after the match. "We felt if we played our best we would have a chance, and unfortunately we weren't able to put that effort together. We have grown tremendously in the last year, and we are proud of that. We are so thankful for our seniors; Sam Gomez, Tatijana Fucka, Mya Michaelson & Brianna Muller, and for their contributions to our program and for buying in to our vision for UAB volleyball and we cannot wait to celebrate their successes through graduation and in life. While we celebrate this season, we also look forward to what is to come. There was some great conversations by young leadership in the locker room about the future, and we cannot wait to keep building."
